On November 3, voters elected Xavier Becerra as governor. Governor-elect Becerra now has the opportunity to make climate action a cornerstone of his efforts to make California more affordable.
California needs true climate leadership more than ever. The devastating Los Angeles fires have caused an estimated $250 billion in damages. Electricity rates for California’s main corporate utilities — SoCal Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas & Electric — have increased by 89 percent over the last decade, and gasoline prices remain high and volatile. The approaching Super El Niño has already brought extreme weather, with communities across the state bracing for more impacts this winter.
In other words, the climate crisis is driving the affordability crisis. Transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy while investing in nature is how we both reduce climate pollution and save billions of dollars avoiding even more disastrous climate impacts.
California has fallen behind on our climate goals, but the incoming Becerra administration can change that. Urge Governor-elect Becerra to advance bold, equitable climate solutions that lower costs, protect communities, and put California back on track to lead the world towards a climate-safe future.
