California has unique opportunities for deploying hybrid carbon dioxide removal strategies that use technology to enhance natural processes that draw down carbon from the atmosphere. This webinar will explore how biochar and enhanced rock weathering (ERW) practices can remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it for long periods of time while improving California’s agricultural soils and forest resilience. Participants will learn how these strategies work, their carbon removal potential, tradeoffs, and co-benefits. We will also cover how carbon removal is measured and verified for these processes, and highlight our new report on responsible carbon removal in California.

Paul promotes healthy soil farming practices through training and outreach to farmers, landowners, and the general public in California. Before joining AFT, Paul worked as the irrigation specialist for Solano Irrigation District, where he provided technical assistance to farmers, facilitated grower workshops, and developed grant proposals. He is a past president of the Solano County Farm Bureau and currently serves on the board of directors of the Solano Resource Conservation District. Paul has owned his own farming operation near Vacaville, California, for over 35 years.

Tom works closely with the California staff to develop and lead AFT programs in the state. Before joining AFT, Tom worked as a program officer for the East-West Center, where he developed and managed educational programs that addressed environmental issues affecting communities in the United States and beyond. Prior to that, he managed the agriculture, food security, and economic development programs at the International Rescue Committee and launched an educational farm that supported underserved farmers and low-income food-insecure communities within the greater Sacramento region.

Peter Minor is a co-founder of Absolute Climate, which is building independent standards for carbon management that measure projects based on their atmospheric impact. A veteran of the carbon removal industry, he previously served as the Director of Science & Innovation at Carbon180. While there, he pioneered core principles required for high-accountability Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV). A UC Berkeley mechanical engineering PhD by training, he applies his expertise in sensors, numerical modeling, and carbon removal science towards building the MRV solutions needed to unlock gigaton scale.

Dr. Corey Myers is Chief Scientist and Co-Founder at Anvil Capture Systems. Prior to joining Anvil, he was the lead engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for CO2 mineralization projects. Dr. Myers was the lead engineer on the KCAC Carbon Mineralization Field Test — the world’s largest test of CO2 mineralization technologies. He also was the LLNL lead on a Department of Energy (DOE)-funded project to set the protocols for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for CO2 mineralization-based CDR processes. Dr. Myers sat on the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Innovation Roadmap team for DOE in the areas of mineralization and marine CDR.
