With an anti-science, climate-denying, far-right extremist officially the Republican nominee for president, it might feel like public support for climate action is dwindling. But recent polling tells a much more encouraging story.
For the first time, a majority of American voters across party lines say they want the country to do more to address the climate crisis. What’s more, 53 percent say they have personally experienced climate impacts. Explaining the connection between extreme weather — especially extreme heat — and the climate crisis has proven the most effective way to cut through decades of fossil fuel industry misinformation and build support for climate solutions across partisan divides.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, climate action is an even higher priority for California voters. Seventy-eight percent of Californians, including a majority of Republicans, say the environment is an important factor in determining who will get their vote for president. And as the toll from heat waves and wildfires continues to rise, so does support for wind and solar. Two-thirds of Californians say they support the state’s goal to reach 100 percent clean electricity by 2045.
Support for Prop 4 — California’s $10 billion bond for clean water and climate resilience — is strong, too. Fifty-nine percent of voters say they plan to vote yes on Prop 4, with support strongest among lower-income, working-class voters.
What does it mean for the climate movement to have public opinion on our side? We must continue organizing! With global leadership lacking, federal action uncertain, and science deniers finding new ways to spread lies, California’s leadership role is critical. When we take action in service of our shared values, we have the power to spark global climate progress.
