Urge the governor and your state elected officials to accelerate climate action

Early last fall, following several weeks of record-breaking heat, fires and smoke, and after The Climate Center submitted a requested comprehensive Executive Order to his office, Governor Newsom issued two Executive Orders to help tackle the climate crisis.

  • Executive Order N-79-20 requiring 100% of all new in-state sales of cars and light trucks to be zero-emissions vehicles by 2035.
  • Executive Order N-82-20 establishing the goal of protecting 30% of California’s lands and waters by 2030 while also outlining some initial actions required to get there including setting goals for carbon sequestration on natural and working lands.

As bold as these first-in-the-nation orders are, the climate crisis requires accelerated action commensurate with the rapidly deteriorating climate reality. California must lead again.

Please join us in urging Governor Newsom to issue additional Executive Orders, per Climate-Safe California, that fully address the climate crisis. We must also urge our state senators and assemblymembers to legislate accelerated laws today, saving lives and dollars while creating millions of new jobs.

Climate-Safe policies include:

  • an immediate halt to new gas and oil drilling permits, with a start to the phase-out of fossil fuel production and exports
  • 100% clean electricity by 2030
  • 100% ZEV car sales by at least 2030
  • a dramatic ramp-up of investments in nature-based sequestration through habitat and soils management
  • major investments in community resilience, including regulatory changes that open up markets for clean energy microgrids and decentralized clean energy.

The latest science demands more aggressive actions be taken sooner for the health of our planet and the health of our communities, especially frontline lower-income communities and communities of color. The state must lead efforts to scale up sequestration in working lands in tandem with fossil fuel phase-out.

Please add your voice today to require removing more carbon pollution than we emit by 2030.
