Governor Newsom is making big moves on climate. We’re grateful for his announcement over the weekend that the state is suing Big Oil for their decades of deceit and climate destruction. But he can do even more to secure California as a climate leader today.

Three critical pieces of climate legislation — SB 253, SB 261, and AB 1167 —  are waiting for Governor Newsom’s signature. He has the power right now to sign these bills into law and lead the nation in holding billion-dollar corporations accountable for their part in the climate crisis.

Governor Newsom also announced in New York that he intends to sign SB 253 and SB 261, but he hasn’t yet indicated where he stands on AB 1167. Fossil fuel corporations will continue to mount fierce opposition, so Governor Newsom needs to hear from you as soon as possible. Here’s the impact that each bill will have:

SB 253, the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, will require U.S.-based corporations doing business in California that make over $1 billion annually to publicly disclose their full carbon footprint.

SB 261, the Climate-Related Financial Risk Act, will require corporations, financial institutions, and insurers to report on climate-related financial risk.

AB 1167, the Orphan Well Bonding Requirements Act, will make the owners of orphaned and idle oil and gas wells pay for properly closing them to protect our communities and our climate — instead of taxpayers.

California has the opportunity to set stricter standards for corporate polluters with this legislation, but oil and gas companies are fighting to keep them from becoming law.

Governor Newsom needs to hear from you — send in your letter using the form below today.

After signing up, we’ll reach out with ways you can take action and organize in your community to make climate solutions a reality.
