Make Polluters Pay for Fueling the Los Angeles Fires

Decades ago, fossil fuel corporations’ own research teams warned that their pollution would irrevocably harm the earth. Instead of heeding scientists’ warnings, Big Oil executives spent millions to deceive our communities about the dangers of climate change and ramped up drilling and pollution in order to line their pockets with billions of dollars in profits.

The firestorm in Los Angeles is only the latest in a string of unprecedented climate disasters that are a direct consequence of Big Oil’s actions. These fossil fuel fires alone are estimated to cost at least $250 billion, officially marking the costliest climate disaster in U.S. history. Yet corporate polluters like Chevron, Exxon, and Shell who are responsible for this crisis haven’t paid a dime.

Our state leaders have the opportunity to hold fossil fuel corporations accountable in the legislature this year. Taxpayers should not be footing the bill for costly disasters that are a direct result of rampant fossil fuel pollution. Governor Newsom and the state legislature must take bold action this year to make polluters pay for climate disaster recovery. The stakes couldn’t be higher for California’s future.
