Victory! The Clean Local Power Act is law and California is closer than ever to affordable, climate-safe electricity

Californians just won a major step toward cheaper, cleaner, more reliable electricity. This week, Governor Newsom signed the Clean Local Power Act, SB 913 (Becker), into law. The Climate Center is proud to have co-sponsored this bill.

This is what climate action at speed and scale looks like. It didn’t happen by accident. It took persistence, strong partnerships, and thousands of Californians raising their voices for a climate-safe future.

For years, The Climate Center has championed local, clean energy as one of the fastest ways to cut climate pollution, lower costs, and make our electric grid more resilient. Decision-makers haven’t always been ready to act.

Last year, Governor Newsom vetoed three common-sense clean energy bills, including our legislation to deploy local, clean energy resources that could save Californians $13.7 billion on electricity costs.

Over the past twelve months, the accelerating climate crisis made the stakes impossible to ignore. Hot days got hotter, electricity bills climbed even higher, and our message began to break through.

We partnered with Senator Josh Becker and Environment California to draft SB 913, the Clean Local Power Act, to fight climate change and make electricity more affordable for everyone.

People power carried it over the finish line. More than 2,300 members of the Climate Center community took action, sending messages to their elected representatives when it mattered most.

If your electricity bill has gone up this year, you’re not alone. Rates for customers of California’s three main corporate utilities — Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas & Electric — have risen 89 percent over the last decade.

Instead of embracing solutions that would lower our bills, corporate utilities have fought tooth and nail to protect their profits. Policies like the Clean Local Power Act will provide clean energy and stabilize the electrical grid, saving you money.

If you’re ready for reliable, affordable electricity that isn’t controlled by corporate utilities, this moment is for you. There are so many ways you can get involved, and thank you again to all of our committed supporters and donors who powered us to this victory. Together we are changing what people believe is possible to achieve across the state we love, and there is more we can do together. We truly value your resilience and resolve.

If you haven’t already, consider becoming a monthly donor today to help bring clean, affordable electricity to more Californians.
