To achieve 100 percent clean electricity by 2045, California will need more wind, solar, and battery storage, but that’s not all. Geothermal energy — a compelling, 24/7/365 clean energy source that can support the electrical grid around the clock — holds immense potential as a clean energy source. Recent technological advances mean geothermal development is no longer limited to hydrothermal hotspots. Even better, these newer technologies are cleaner than traditional geothermal, producing virtually no climate pollution.
The California Energy Commission (CEC), which is responsible for helping the state reach 100 percent clean electricity, is adding a chapter on geothermal energy to its Integrated Energy Policy Report for the first time. This is a promising step forward because this report influences energy decisions at state agencies and in the California legislature. However, deploying geothermal energy in California with appropriate social, environmental, and workforce safeguards requires navigating a complex web of technical, financial, and regulatory hurdles.
