This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate is the most provocative, important, and personal book yet from Naomi Klein, author of the award-winning #1 global bestsellers The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism and No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies. The New Yorker calls Naomi Klein “the most visible and influential figure on the American left—what Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky were thirty years ago,” and Rachel Maddow called The Shock Doctrine “The only book of the last few years in American publishing that I would describe as a mandatory must-read.” With This Changes Everything, which is being published just before the U.N. Climate Summit on September 23, Klein offers a brilliant explanation of why the climate crisis is an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways.

Forget everything you think you know about global warming. The really inconvenient truth is that it’s not about carbon—it’s about capitalism. The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better. Klein exposes the myths that are clouding the climate debate: We have been told the market will save us, when in fact the addiction to profit and growth is digging us in deeper every day. We have been told it’s impossible to get off fossil fuels when in fact we know exactly how to do it—it just requires breaking every rule in the “free-market” playbook: reining in corporate power, rebuilding local economies, and reclaiming our democracies. Klein also builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to reduce gaping inequalities.

She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. And she demonstrates precisely why leaving the crisis to the market has not—and cannot—fix the problem but will instead make things worse, by unleashing ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism.
