• Polystyrene (commonly referred to as Styrofoam) is made from petroleum, a non-renewable, highly polluting and increasingly scarce commodity.
• The environmental impacts of polystyrene from energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and total environmental damage rank second highest behind aluminum, according to the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
• Polystyrene is a principle component of urban litter and marine debris, and is detrimental to wildlife that ingest it.
• Toxic chemicals leach out of polystyrene products into food, and threaten human health and reproductive systems.
