Carbon Dioxide Removal: Considerations for Responsible Deployment on Land and Ocean

Side Event Room 8 in the Baku Stadium at COP 29 in Azerbaijan

The Climate Center, World Ocean Council, and ICOS-ERIC are partnering for an Official Side Event at COP 29 on responsible carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Reaching net zero and net negative requires deploying new and scaling current CDR strategies while establishing safeguards for communities and ecosystems.

We heard from experts from around the world on the importance of community engagement, considerations for responsible research and development for marine-CDR, scientific rigor needed behind Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), and the experience of landowners and farmers in carbon markets.

Speakers

  • Barry Vesser, The Climate Center
  • Jill Storey, World Ocean Council
  • Dr. Werner Kutsch, Integrated Carbon Observation System European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ICOS-ERIC)
  • Louise Bedsworth, Center for Law, Energy & the Environment, UC Berkeley
