Californians are facing the twin crises of soaring utility bills and unreliable electricity. Wildfires, heatwaves, and other climate-fueled extreme weather events pose an increasing threat to the reliability and resilience of our electrical grid.
Electricity rates continue to climb as corporate utilities spend on expensive grid infrastructure upgrades. In addition, utilities are using climate-polluting “peaker” plants fueled by methane gas to meet peak energy demand in the evenings. California can do better.
Bidirectional electric vehicles, including electric school buses, are an untapped solution that can keep the lights on and save Californians money. These vehicles can both charge their batteries and release energy from their batteries back to the grid, enabling them to act as “batteries on wheels.” That means they can power homes and businesses when the grid goes down or be moved to critical public facilities like medical facilities, food stores, and community resilience centers. Leveraging these vehicles for stored energy reduces the need for building more expensive peaker power plants and transmission lines.
Urge Governor Newsom to use an Executive Order to accelerate bidirectional electric vehicle adoption and leverage it for a more affordable, reliable, and resilient electricity grid.
