What we do in California to address the climate crisis has a ripple effect across the world. With a climate-denying, pro-oil president waging war on federal climate action, California’s climate leadership is more important than ever.

To save lives and inspire the world to greater climate action, California will need to fight back against President Trump’s climate denialism.

Climate deniers in the White House are attacking federal climate progress at every level. On his first day in office, President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement and announced his plans to “drill, baby, drill” even though the United States is already the single-largest producer of oil and gas in the history of the world. Thousands of federal workers have been fired and climate change has been scrubbed from federal websites. The Environmental Protection Agency has recommended reversing its finding that greenhouse gas emissions are a danger to public health and may stop tracking emissions from corporate polluters altogether. And recently, the president issued an executive order aiming to strip states’ authority to fight the climate crisis. This administration has vowed to increase reliance on polluting fossil fuels, kill clean energy, freeze funding for climate programs, and revoke incentives that make electric vehicles affordable for working-class families.

Our elected officials in California — led by Governor Newsom, Senate President pro tempore Mike McGuire, and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas — promised to defend California’s climate progress from the new administration’s attacks. But we need more than defense to prevent deadly, climate-fueled heat waves, wildfires, floods, and droughts.

To save lives and inspire the world to greater climate action, California will need to once again raise its climate ambitions.

Please join us in urging Governor Newsom and state leaders to stand up to climate deniers in DC!
