SB 582, calling for net-negative emissions by 2035, just cleared another key committee (Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water)!
California law may finally accelerate timelines for a climate-safe future
Senate Bill (SB) 582, which would establish the state’s first-ever statutory net-negative emissions goal, with a target date of 2035, just officially passed out of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee. SB 582 also calls for a Just Resilience Plan to drive urgently needed investments in California’s most vulnerable communities. Take action.

We extend our gratitude to Senator Henry Stern for his visionary climate leadership and to UC Berkeley Professor Dan Kammen for his testimony in support of SB 582 (which you can read here). Both were early endorsers of Climate-Safe California! You can watch the excellent introduction and testimony provided by Senator Stern and Dr. Kammen, as well as Alex Jackson of NRDC here (begins at the timestamp 1:59:26).
We also thank YOU, our 1000+ partners and supporters who endorsed Climate-Safe California, for helping to ensure that our urgent message of accelerating climate action timelines in California is being heard by our state leaders!
We applaud Senator Stern for including a target of 80% below 1990 levels of greenhouse gas emissions, doubling our current state ambitions, based on the latest science and rapidly worsening climate.
SB 582 underscores the critical need for accelerated climate action timelines, moving the state towards our urgent Climate-Safe California 2030 goals. Please join us in signing on.

SB 582’s ambitions are indispensable for a livable climate, social justice, and achieving the state’s vast economic potential with benefits for the health and well-being of all Californians.
With limited time remaining to avert a full on climate catastrophe, California must take courageous and bold action. Passing SB 582 into law is a key step in that direction. Doing so will not only re-establish California as an international climate leader, but will also galvanize equitable public and private investments in the solutions needed, from clean energy and mobility, to nature-based sequestration and community resilience.
Thank you for your partnership that makes our Climate-Safe California efforts possible!
