Barry Vesser, the Chief Operating Officer at The Climate Center since 2019, will provide project counsel. Barry joined The Climate Center in 2005 and has held positions as Deputy Director and Financial Officer. He currently leads The Climate Center’s program and policy development and the implementation teams. In 2018 Barry began working with a group of energy experts and advocates envisioning a more decentralized energy system that was clean, affordable, resilient, and equitable. He then championed the development of the Center’s Community Energy Resilience project. He continues to serve on the Community Energy Resilience Core Team developing policy and working to get it passed at the state legislature.

He is an advocate and organizer working to educate and promote policies to address the climate crisis. In 2010 he began leading an initially modest network of businesses that grew to be the Business for Clean Energy Network of over 75 businesses committed to leading on climate solutions. Barry was also the principal architect of the Business of Local Energy Symposium which became an annual event to support advancing Community Choice Energy for clean energy deployment in California. By its fifth year, the event attracted more than 400 businesses, elected officials, regulators, and climate advocates from across the state.

Barry helped lead the team to expand The Center’s work on Community Choice Energy to a statewide phenomenon supporting innovative programs to reduce greenhouse gases and provide new services to customers. This included successfully organizing and advocating for  Community Choice Energy in San Jose, the biggest city in California at the time to create a local clean energy agency.

Prior to working at The Climate Center Barry directed a community-based nonprofit in the Sierra foothills and built the organization from total resources of less than $8000 to $2.1 million in less than seven years. He was also director of a nonprofit promoting organic agriculture in Nepal and was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines. He has an M.A. in International Public Administration from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. He enjoys backpacking, tennis, Tai Chi, poetry, and has an unhealthy preoccupation with Monty Python.
