UPDATE: AB 2649 failed to advance out of the California State Senate Appropriations Committee. Although the bill was held, nature-based sequestration is now one of the top priorities for the Newsom administration.

AB 2649 — sponsored by The Climate Center and introduced by Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) — would have established California’s first statutory targets for nature-based carbon sequestration. Nature-based carbon sequestration can help California improve water security in the face of extreme drought, contain the spread of wildfires, and replace chemically-intensive agriculture techniques that pollute communities and endanger farmworkers.

Thank Assemblymember Garcia today for championing this bill and paving the way for California to lead on nature-based carbon removal!
